Consistent Earnings Through Realistic Writing Objectives

Chapter 1: Setting Realistic Writing Goals
In the pursuit of consistent income through writing, it's essential to establish achievable objectives. This year, I aimed to publish an article each month on Medium. However, due to unforeseen health issues that led to hospitalization over the summer, I fell short of this target. While setbacks can happen, I believe in taking responsibility for our goals.
"If it were easy, everyone would do it." Thus, I reflect on what I could have done to better navigate these challenges. Although I had a list of potential article titles, I lacked completed drafts prepared in advance for emergencies. It's important to recognize that planning should accommodate unexpected events. While prioritizing health is critical—an insight I've gained through my own experiences—having a backup plan is equally vital for achieving your writing aspirations.
What is Realistic?
The key question is: what can you realistically achieve given your current circumstances, responsibilities, and abilities?
What Topics Should I Write About?
The best piece of advice I've received regarding writing came from a book on establishing a writing career. It encouraged writing about familiar subjects. This has proven effective for me; if I wish to delve into an unfamiliar topic, I first conduct thorough research. Writing about what you know enhances the flow of ideas, and the impact of this approach is best appreciated through personal experimentation.
When Should I Schedule Writing Time?
Consider how you can carve out daily writing time, as discussed in my article, "Three Reasons to Write Daily." Often, it might seem like there's no time to write, but committing to a feasible schedule increases the likelihood of meeting your goals consistently. For instance, if mornings are challenging due to early work hours, setting a goal to write at 5 AM may not be practical. It’s essential to identify periods that naturally suit your routine, which could be after your children are asleep or during quieter moments in your day.
Where Should I Write?
Your writing environment should foster creativity and concentration. Attempting to write in a bustling playroom or during brief office breaks may hinder your focus. Instead, find a dedicated space where you can immerse yourself in your work without distractions.
What Will Generate Income?
To make money, produce content that resonates with your audience and is available for purchase or subscription. Pay attention to feedback and adapt your approach accordingly.
Creating a Successful Writing System
Establish a framework that facilitates your writing success, whether in terms of readership or financial gain. Reflecting on my earlier challenges, I recognize I could have pre-written evergreen articles instead of relying solely on monthly new content. A feasible system might involve preparing a year's worth of articles in advance, independent of specific dates or events. Additionally, consider using AI tools for generating ideas, which can enhance your planning process.
Allowing Space for Creativity
While planning is crucial, it’s also important to leave room for spontaneous inspiration. Carrying a notebook or using a digital device for jotting down ideas can ensure you capture those creative sparks.
