Embracing Aging: A Transgender Woman's Perspective on Health

Chapter 1: Daily Reflections on Aging
As I rise each morning, I take a moment to evaluate my upcoming agenda. Recently, I noticed that the majority of my appointments in the next week are health-related. For clarity, I consider my mental health appointments as part of my medical care.
For instance, next Tuesday, I have a virtual LGBTQ group meeting planned—assuming the Veteran’s Administration can finalize the logistics. On Wednesday, I have a mammogram scheduled at one of the University of Cincinnati hospitals. While it may seem inconvenient, I view it as a necessary step to monitor my health, especially since breast cancer runs in my family. Then on Friday, I have my regular therapy session, which is also virtual and typically goes smoothly. Additionally, a week from Wednesday, I’m set to receive my Covid booster at a nearby location in suburban Cincinnati. With bi-weekly therapy appointments, it won’t be long before this cycle begins anew.
You might find, as I do, that these appointments leave little room for enjoyment. To make matters worse, Liz was unable to attend the monthly social for our transgender and cross-dresser group last night. Perhaps I can persuade her to join me for a night out one weekend soon.
In the meantime, I am grateful that as I near my 73rd birthday, my health remains fairly stable. I'm back to walking daily and writing. My father succumbed to dementia at 86, spending his final days watching Animal Planet, so I strive to keep my mind engaged through my writing. I still aspire to compile my work into another book someday. My mother passed away at 77 due to heart issues, and since I share her genetic background, I aim to stay active to maintain my heart health.
Section 1.1: The Intersection of Identity and Health
You may wonder how this all connects to my experience as a transgender woman. The reality is that while these health matters are universal, they resonate deeply with my journey. My narrative reflects the life of a transgender woman, highlighting the same challenges and concerns faced by any cisgender woman. Health and family issues affect us all, and we are not fundamentally different; we have simply chosen to live authentically.

Section 1.2: Embracing the Journey
Ultimately, there is little I can change about the phase of life I’m in. All I can do is strive to make the most of my circumstances.
