The Essential Role of Writers in Entertainment and Society

The Significance of Writers
As a writer, I find it encouraging that Hollywood actors are supporting the writers' strike. However, I am often disheartened to hear the ongoing debate about whether writers deserve better compensation. Frankly, it frustrates me to see people dismiss the notion that writers should be paid fairly. The reality is that writing is a craft that takes years of practice to master, and without writers, the entertainment industry as we know it simply wouldn’t exist.
Consider this: a script serves as the foundation of any television show or movie. Without a script, there is no show — even reality TV relies on writers. No screenplay means no movie. You can assemble all the top stars and hire the best effects teams, but without a compelling narrative, you’re left with nothing. A strong story is as essential to a film as a skeleton is to a body. Words form the structure of the visual entertainment world; everything else is just decoration.
Section 1.1 The Value of Storytelling
There is a prevailing misconception that creative professionals don’t deserve to earn a living because our work is perceived as easy or inconsequential. However, studio executives amass millions, not just because they excel at business negotiations. If "Titanic" hadn’t presented a narrative that resonated with countless viewers, it wouldn’t have achieved its monumental financial success, even with impressive visual effects. While we are all familiar with the Titanic's tragic story, the film breathed life into the human experiences surrounding it.
Audiences didn’t fall for the ship; they became invested in Jack and Rose. Yet, actors like Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet needed the script to bring those characters to life.
In a similar vein, "Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope" remains a cultural icon because of its timeless themes of good versus evil and its memorable characters. The actors may shine, but their success hinges on the dialogue and relationships crafted by writers. Writers create the characters, and actors give them a voice.
Subsection 1.1.1 The Unity of Actors and Writers
This unity is likely why many actors have rallied in support of the writers' strike. Numerous actors are also writers and appreciate the challenges involved in crafting quality scripts. Even those who don’t write recognize that their careers depend on the talents of writers.
Section 1.2 Fair Compensation for Writers
It’s disheartening to see writers excluded from a fair share of the profits when films or TV shows generate massive revenue. It simply doesn’t make sense.
Business professionals often harbor a disregard for creative types, viewing us as dreamers and misfits — which, to be fair, can be true. Many creatives prefer to avoid formal attire and lengthy meetings that lead nowhere. We are focused on the work at hand.
Chapter 2 The Challenge of AI in Writing
It's also worth noting that many businesspeople lack the ability to craft a compelling narrative. They can crunch numbers, but can they create a piece of writing that evokes genuine emotion? Certainly not. Without writers, those high-powered executives have nothing to market.
That’s why I remain skeptical about the potential for AI to replace writers. While AI might mimic a specific writing style, the true essence of writing lies in its capacity to convey human emotions through words. How can a computer replicate that connection?
In conclusion, without writers, we would be devoid of plays, literature, research, laws, poetry, song lyrics, advertisements, narrative video games, comic books, and even comic book heroes. We play a significant role in society, whether appreciated or not, and we deserve fair compensation for our contributions.
