Excited for the Future of Macs: A Year Without New Releases

The Surprising News on Mac Releases
Recent reports indicate that we won't see any new Mac releases this year. Mark Gurman, known for his insights on Apple, suggests that after the somewhat tumultuous iPad launch, Apple has decided to hold off on additional releases. This means the M2 MacBook Air stands as the final Mac introduction for 2022, a model that has had its share of challenges.
It may seem counterintuitive, but this news is actually quite welcome for me. Let me explain.
A Look at Apple's iPad Strategy
My review of the 10th generation iPad is now available!
In his latest Power On newsletter, Gurman forecasts that Apple is planning to unveil upgraded Mac models, including M2 versions of the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros, in the first quarter of 2023. Historically, Apple tends to shy away from launching new products in January or February, suggesting we might not see any new Macs until at least March 2023.
This aligns with some recent comments from Apple’s CFO, Luca Maestri, who noted that the company anticipates slower revenue growth for the holiday quarter, partly due to the absence of a major MacBook Pro launch this year. While merely adding an M2 chip to existing models may not qualify as a "big" launch, I believe Gurman's assessment rings true: we likely won't see any new Macs this year.
The Anticipation for the New Mac Mini
One Mac I eagerly await is the upcoming Mac mini. Rumors abound regarding its potential features: a refreshed design, vibrant color options, improved Bluetooth functionality, and possibly M2 chips.
I built my business around the base model M1 Mac mini, so it holds significant value for me. However, I don't want a new Mac mini just for the sake of having one. Depending on whether the new model features the M2 chip like the MacBook Air or something more advanced, I plan to create something exciting with it.
As many of you know, music production is a hobby I've pursued since my teenage years, though I've found less time to dedicate to it lately. I often receive inquiries about my music-making process and the tools I use, and I’m eager to address these questions. To do so effectively, I need to carve out a dedicated space in my studio and allocate time for music production.
The M1 Mac mini will play a crucial role in this endeavor. My intention was to upgrade to the new version and use it as the centerpiece of a music production setup. However, given the delay in the new release, I’ll be reviving my M1 Mac mini for the time being and focusing on this new project, which I plan to feature as a series on my YouTube channel.
Reimagining My MacBook Pro Experience
A few weeks ago, I shared my experience lugging around a hefty 16-inch MacBook Pro through London. While it was essential for that day, its weight was a burden. I had considered purchasing a new 14-inch model to complement my current setup, but it appears I’ll have to postpone that plan.
Traveling more frequently has made me reconsider my gear. A compact laptop that can seamlessly transition between being a production powerhouse and a writing tool would be ideal. Unfortunately, it seems I’ll have to wait a bit longer to start this experiment, especially with the ongoing delays regarding the iPad Pro, which fell short of my expectations.
The Big Question: Where Is the Mac Pro?
While I'm relieved about not needing to invest in new Macs for now, one pressing question lingers: what has happened to the new Mac Pro? I anticipated a major announcement to conclude 2022, particularly since Apple indicated in 2020 that the transition to their own silicon would be completed within two years. The word "about" in their statement suggests uncertainty, and perhaps the Mac Pro was the final piece they knew would take longer than anticipated.
