Exploring New Horizons: My Journey Beyond Medium in 2024

Chapter 1: A Shift in Perspective
After five years of writing, I am now contemplating my next steps. The future looks promising as I shift my focus towards platforms like YouTube and Substack.
As a reader and editor, I've grown weary of the repetitive and uninspiring content that floods platforms like Medium. In my publication, ILLUMINATION, we've opted to steer clear of such stories. While these Meta narratives may attract attention, they often lack substance. This is my perspective, and while my articles may not garner the audience I desire, I refuse to compromise on quality. I aim to create content that both entertains and informs, and my loyal followers appreciate that effort.
This reflection isn't merely a critique of Medium but rather an exploration of my plans to branch out to more effective platforms. Writing about Medium may seem mundane, yet here I am, sharing my thoughts. I've often pondered how readers might discover my work, leading me to contribute to the very discussions I find tiresome. Ultimately, I wish for my writing to open new doors.
Chapter 1.1: The Learning Experience
I've come to realize that earning a living through Medium is unlikely. In previous writings, I've clarified that financial gain is not my primary goal anymore. Instead, I see Medium as a training ground to enhance my writing skills.
To improve my craft, I've been striving for higher quality in my stories. Initially, I believed I understood what the platform deemed worthy of a boost. However, my expectations were dashed when a carefully crafted piece failed to receive the recognition I anticipated, despite receiving guidance from experienced editors.
The frustration was palpable. "Does effort and quality not count?" I found myself asking. Is it necessary to be part of an elite circle to gain visibility? I remain uncertain about my path forward.

Chapter 1.2: The Elitism Conundrum
It seems there's a prevailing atmosphere of exclusivity on Medium, which may discourage new voices. Do I need to be a published author or hold advanced degrees to be seen? The answer eludes me.
I've exhausted all my ideas for succeeding on this platform. Regular writing hasn't yielded success, and attempts at curation have been fruitless. If Medium isn't the answer for building an audience, it falls on me to learn the art of self-promotion. I’m willing to take on that challenge and improve my skills, but I wish Medium would do more to support emerging writers.

Chapter 2: The Challenge of Visibility
It's disheartening to see my best work go unnoticed. Despite checking all the boxes for what should be a boost-worthy story, it fell flat. The rejection stung, but I recognize that my growth as a writer since joining Medium in 2019 has been significant.
Unfortunately, it feels like Medium is stifling my voice, which is frustrating for someone who once believed in its potential. The platform risks alienating everyday writers like me, and I question whether it can sustain itself if it loses this community.
Promoting quality content from new voices could be beneficial for Medium. Bringing back features that foster community engagement would be a step in the right direction. I had started to build connections with fellow writers, but now their stories rarely cross my feed.
Chapter 3: Moving Forward
The world of writing is vibrant and full of opportunity. Yet, Medium's focus on profit over its contributors could jeopardize its future.
I'm tired of battling algorithms and curators. I've begun exploring alternative platforms and building my presence on YouTube. This shift has encouraged me to master the art of self-promotion. I aim to network on LinkedIn and beyond to enhance my visibility.
In conclusion, a thriving platform for writers is invaluable. However, if Medium neglects the very writers who enrich its content, its longevity is in question. Here’s to new beginnings and the exploration of new avenues for my writing journey.
