Finding Happiness in Simple Pleasures: A Journey to Contentment

Chapter 1: The Value of Simplicity
In a world that often equates worth with wealth, status, and achievements, the pressure to conform can be overwhelming. A low social standing can feel like a nightmare, especially in developed nations where abundance is the norm. When we yearn for what we lack, feelings of anxiety and hopelessness can arise. Despite having our fundamental needs met, we often make life unbearable by fixating on our deficiencies.
Have you ever considered how your life might be enriched by recognizing what you already possess? Personally, I consider myself fortunate to have experienced a life with limited resources. Until the age of 27, I earned less than $15,000 annually, and my parents held modest jobs throughout my upbringing. They rarely treated themselves, and we only went on one overseas vacation during my childhood—a significant event for us at the time.
As I embarked on my entrepreneurial journey, I aimed to achieve enough success to travel in business class and stay at a prestigious six-star resort. However, once I could afford such luxuries, I found myself disinterested. What would I truly miss by not indulging in these experiences? All that would change is my perception of enjoyment, not my level of happiness. I realized that I had never felt unhappy due to financial constraints. Why would I willingly invite discomfort into my life now?
Individuals who live within their means often experience a sense of freedom that those constantly seeking upgrades do not. Is the pursuit worth the effort? With increasing exposure to expensive pleasures, the joy derived from simpler experiences tends to diminish. When easy-to-access joys are deemed insufficient, one can become ensnared in a cycle of desiring costly indulgences.
Instead of fixating on what you "need" for happiness, consider asking more meaningful questions about the present moments that you can enjoy. What do you observe during your daily strolls? What conversations frequently engage you? How do you spend your leisure time? True wealth is found in embracing affordable pleasures. When you recognize that you have enough, you will embody that sense of abundance and escape the relentless chase for material gains that quickly lose their appeal.
Desire: A Double-Edged Sword
Desire can lead to suffering. While it's impossible to live entirely devoid of desires, we must consciously select which to pursue. Unfortunately, many people fall into the trap of desire without reflection. A single scroll through Instagram can bombard you with images of the elite, prompting feelings of inadequacy rather than fostering appreciation for your unique self.
Why do we continuously increase our desires? Why not seek pleasures that are more personal, enjoyable, and economical? By doing so, you can alleviate the stress that many endure due to unfulfilled desires. Some label this approach as minimalism, but the terminology is less important than the philosophy itself. You enter this world with nothing and will leave with nothing, and the richness of your experiences hinges entirely on your perspective.
Living with Purpose
I strive to stay grounded in gratitude for the blessings I've received, particularly those I did not earn. Why was I born as the child of my parents in 1990? What led to my existence in an era characterized by technological advancements and improved living standards? During my two years in Vietnam, I witnessed poverty that was foreign to me, yet the resilience and joy of the locals served as a powerful reminder of how fortunate I am.
What sort of privilege allows me to advise others to consume less while I have the means to communicate this message? When you remain aware of your needs, you foster empathy for those in different circumstances. As a thirty-two-year-old navigating life, I seek to avoid the pitfalls that many stumble into.
If you find yourself feeling anxious because of what social media portrays, consider re-evaluating your perspective. The human mind often gravitates toward problems, while tranquility seems elusive for many. Reflect on your choices regarding your suffering—realizing that it is often self-imposed can shift your outlook significantly.
Regardless of the discomfort of my next budget flight or a stay in a less luxurious hotel, I choose to be thankful for the opportunity to live, eat, and sleep in a world where my life is not at risk. I relish my coffee, express gratitude for the kind people around me, and appreciate the roof over my head. How fortunate I am! If these reflections don't inspire me to cherish life's simplest pleasures, I doubt anything will.
