Exploring the Galaxy S22 Ultra: Features that Tempt an iPhone User

Written on

Chapter 1: Anticipation for the Galaxy S22 Ultra

I eagerly await the arrival of my brand new Galaxy S22 Ultra next Friday. My excitement is palpable. This year, I've decided to venture beyond the confines of Apple's appealing ecosystem. My experimentation began with a Motorola phone during a recent trip to the picturesque English Lake District, and I'm also training myself to use a Windows laptop instead of my beloved MacBook Air.

However, this feels different. For years, I've had my eye on a Galaxy Note. Let’s be honest, the Galaxy S22 Ultra is, in essence, a Galaxy Note.

The Samsung Galaxy S22 — A Response from an iPhone Enthusiast

Which model do you think I chose to pre-order?

I will be using Samsung’s latest flagship alongside my iPhone 13 mini. It’s a bit like having twins, I know, but this setup will allow me to determine which platform I prefer. Could this be the moment I finally switch from the iPhone? Here are five features of the Galaxy S22 Ultra that I’m particularly excited about.

Section 1.1: The Note Experience

There have been numerous occasions when I've nearly purchased a Galaxy Note. Unfortunately, after the 2017 model's infamous issues, I decided to stick with what I knew. I appreciate my iPhone, but its familiarity has become somewhat dull.

The allure of the Note experience, now evident in Samsung’s S line, has a dedicated following. Enthusiasts of the S Pen tackle various tasks on their almost tablet-sized devices, refusing to switch from the Note for anything. Watching from the sidelines, the Note experience appears captivating and incredibly enticing. I feel a strong desire to join that community.

Subsection 1.1.1: Exploring the Bigger Screen

The Galaxy S22 Ultra's impressive display

The S22 Ultra’s AMOLED screen is unlike anything else. It’s enormous and nearly bezel-free, showcasing impressive technology like 1,750 nits of peak brightness and a 120Hz refresh rate. I can't wait to experience this firsthand.

However, I do have some concerns about how the S22 Ultra will feel in my pocket, similar to my thoughts on the G200. Time will tell if the benefits of the large screen outweigh its potential discomfort.

Section 1.2: The S Pen Advantage

Having embraced digital note-taking, largely thanks to the remarkable iPad mini, I've also been testing the reMarkable 2 tablet, which allows for writing on a Kindle-like device.

The S Pen has always intrigued me as it is the only smartphone stylus I’ve seen that seems genuinely useful. This feature appears to be a major draw for many Note users. Whether the S22 Ultra's screen will suffice for my note-taking needs remains to be seen, but I love the idea of having a tool at my fingertips for jotting down ideas or grocery lists whenever necessary.

Chapter 2: Samsung’s Unique Android Experience

Samsung has layered its own interface, known as ‘One UI’, over Android since version nine, following various attempts to customize the operating system for its users. Previous efforts, like TouchWiz, were less than successful, but One UI seems to have hit the mark.

I’m eager to experience it firsthand, especially since my recent Android experiences have been limited to the stock versions on devices like the Pixel 4a and Motorola's G series. I enjoy experimenting with new technology and find myself somewhat bored with iOS. Bring it on!

Section 2.1: Unexpected Discoveries

Whenever I review tech outside my usual preferences, I often stumble upon delightful surprises. Features that were previously overlooked often end up being my favorites. For example, I was pleasantly surprised by the high refresh rate on the Moto G200, despite initially dismissing its importance.

I’ve highlighted the major features above—the screen, the S Pen, and Samsung’s One UI. However, what hidden gems lie within the S22 Ultra? I’ll keep you updated once I’ve spent some time with it.
