Why 'Work Hard' is Misguided Advice for Entrepreneurs

Written on

Chapter 1: The Hustle Culture

In today's entrepreneurial landscape, the culture of relentless effort is prevalent.

When you mention the names of highly successful entrepreneurs, the common refrain you'll encounter is: "Put in the hard work to achieve your goals." Some well-known figures have faced backlash for expressing frustration over people's lack of commitment to success, implying that the gap between their achievements and others' stems from differing levels of effort. Their message is clear: "If you want to succeed, stop making excuses and start hustling."

While I can acknowledge that dedication and effort are crucial, there are significant flaws in the "work harder" mindset. Firstly, it mistakenly assumes that sheer effort is the sole requirement for success, which is simply not accurate. Secondly, it overlooks the reality that individuals have varying capacities for hard work, which can differ greatly based on numerous factors.

My parents, for instance, are Haitian immigrants who have toiled throughout their lives but have not reached the heights of success like some others. They never intended to, and that needs to be recognized.

When successful female entrepreneurs advise a room full of aspiring single mothers, many of whom juggle multiple jobs just to make ends meet, the notion that they need to "work harder" becomes misguided. If these women barely have an additional 10 hours to dedicate to starting a business, where would they find the extra time?

This perspective often fails to consider the privilege that comes with suggesting "Just work harder." While I firmly believe that sustained effort yields results, it's equally important to be strategic about your work. Understanding what tasks to prioritize, when to tackle them, and how to structure your business model is essential. Simply working hard is futile if the work lacks direction and planning.

Thus, it’s not sufficient to only "work hard." One must learn to identify the most impactful work and understand how to scale a business effectively, allowing for delegation of responsibilities to others.

Another critical aspect that many successful entrepreneurs shy away from discussing is the need to work smarter and make sacrifices. Achieving significant success often demands trade-offs, whether it involves time away from family, neglecting self-care, or even sacrificing personal relationships. If your goal is to attain a high level of success, you must be prepared for these sacrifices.

I’m not suggesting that these sacrifices are just or fair; life is inherently unequal. However, it’s crucial to be willing to face these challenges if that’s the price of success. Unfortunately, few within the hustle culture openly acknowledge the sacrifices they’ve made to reach a point where they can enjoy the lifestyle they desire.

Ultimately, I believe that hard work is vital, but it loses its effectiveness without a strategic approach. Additionally, we must recognize both the privilege and the sacrifices involved when advising others on their efforts.

Those of us immersed in the hustle culture should not apologize for our hard work, but we must be aware of the privilege that influences our perspectives. It’s essential to avoid looking down on those who may be doing their best under different circumstances.

Let's focus on helping others adopt a more strategic approach so they can work smarter and harder, without belittling those who may be exerting considerable effort in their own way.
