Navigating Career Changes: 3 Steps to Pivot Successfully

Chapter 1 Understanding Career Transitions
Have you ever felt trapped in your career? Many young professionals often ask me how I managed to move across various crucial sectors within the Global Banking and Finance industry. The answer? A mix of LUCK, ACTION, and the guidance of MENTORS and SPONSORS.
Throughout my nearly thirty years in the Global Finance sector, I've gathered diverse experiences across several key areas:
❇️ Global Markets: I began in Operations before transitioning to Sales on the trading desk, dealing with cash and derivative products across all asset categories, including equities, fixed income, foreign exchange, and commodities.
❇️ Private Wealth Management: As a Client Advisor, I served ultra-high-net-worth individuals (UHNW), Family Offices, and affluent clients, focusing on portfolio-centric advice rather than transactional interactions. This included access to both public and private markets as well as lending services.
❇️ Global Transaction Banking: I led a sales and business development team across Asia Pacific, starting in Sydney and later relocating to Hong Kong, where I have resided for the past 15 years.
❇️ Corporate Banking: I managed a diverse portfolio of top-tier clients, both global and regionally headquartered, from a multi-product standpoint.
❇️ Private Equity: I served as Chief Operating Officer (COO) for a fund entity.
❇️ General Management: As the Head of the Hong Kong branch for an Australian bank, my responsibilities included Bank Regulator Governance, People Engagement/Culture, and managing Client Relationships, particularly during the pandemic when face-to-face meetings were challenging.
❇️ Blockchain Fintech: Recently, I joined a Hong Kong-based firm as a member of their Advisory Board, collaborating with the executive management team and Board of Directors on strategic growth initiatives.
So, how did I achieve such diverse transitions within global financial institutions? For those familiar with my LinkedIn profile, you might know me as an 'Accidental Banker'.
3 Simple Steps to Pivot
(Note: While these steps may seem straightforward, consistency, perseverance, and commitment are crucial!)
1️⃣ Broaden Your Professional Network (Genuinely): Authenticity is key. Rather than immediately seeking favors, jobs, or references, invest time in building meaningful relationships and connections.
2️⃣ Embrace a Growth Mindset: Never stop learning! Focus on acquiring new skills and knowledge in industries that are on the rise. Be pragmatic; for example, while there’s a high demand for Software Engineers skilled in Blockchain, I wouldn’t rush to learn coding without interest.
3️⃣ Apply for New Opportunities: Don’t let the fear of rejection hold you back. Apply even if you meet only half the qualifications. Request feedback on why you weren’t selected and take actionable steps to address any gaps, ensuring you are more prepared next time.
