Navigating the Challenges of Recovery: A Personal Journey

Chapter 1: Encountering the Unwelcome Virus

Last month, I shared my experience with a virus that caught me off guard. Feeling vibrant in March, I was confident that my immune system was in excellent condition. However, one weekend morning, I followed my usual routine—coffee, yoga, coffee again, and breakfast. A few days later, I realized I had hardly eaten anything since then. I even forced myself to have breakfast and coffee, which my body clearly rejected. Lesson learned: I must heed my body's signals over my own thoughts!

What transpired? It appears that my immune system wasn't as robust as I believed. I neglected to wear a mask during a shopping trip, and to top it off, I had a heavy cart to maneuver, filled with items like soil for my garden and cat litter. Normally, such physical exertion wouldn’t faze me, but I suspect it contributed to my decline. My body was still on the mend! I experienced dizziness, fevers exceeding 100 degrees, and overwhelming fatigue—both mentally and physically. To top it off, I was coughing intensely. Unlike my previous illness, which affected my head, this one targeted my chest.

A serene scene of a garden awaiting care

I focused on resting, hydrating, and mostly eating toast. The absence of coffee, a staple in my routine, was a clear indicator of my ill health. Forcing myself to drink it was a mistake; I'll wait until my body craves it again!

Did I consult a healthcare professional? No, I had done that during my first illness to rule out anything serious. Though I was feeling quite unwell, I kept urgent care and the ER in mind as a backup plan. Thankfully, the worst seems to be behind me, though I am still in recovery mode and have gleaned several important lessons:

  1. Recovery isn't guaranteed just because you think it is.
  2. Always carry a mask—don’t forget it!
  3. Allow yourself several weeks, or even a month, to fully recuperate.
  4. Avoid pushing yourself too hard!
  5. Eat mindfully—it's a good practice even when not feeling ill.

As Spring approaches, with warmer temperatures beckoning, my garden patiently awaits my attention. However, this week, I find myself mostly indoors, lacking the strength for physical tasks. Pushing myself to tend to the garden may not have been the wisest choice, even though it seemed appealing at the time!

The raised beds will still be there, and my seed planting can be postponed for another week or two. I am confident that I will recover! All I need is patience—something I am learning is increasingly vital as I age. Recovery takes longer now than it did in my 20s, which feels a bit unfair since my time seems more limited now.

But that's life, and I'm not complaining. Overall, I am grateful for my good health.

To a healthy Spring!
