Chapter 1: Introduction to Surfing Corporate
What happens when two accomplished corporate leaders join forces to tackle a significant challenge? You get two driven individuals who have dedicated their lives to hard work and smart strategies, now facing the realities of the corporate world. Fortunately for their audience, the outcome turned out to be Aileen & Glenda 1 — Reality 0.
In September 2021, Aileen Merciel and Glenda Pacanins launched the Surfing Corporate podcast, aiming to create and maintain an independent platform that addresses the complexities of corporate life. As they gear up for a new season starting on September 18th, the podcast's tagline captures its essence: "Hosted by Aileen Merciel and Glenda Pacanins, former media executives who have witnessed the realities behind corporate facades (with a dash of wicked humor), this podcast intends to entertain while providing practical insights for those navigating the turbulent waters of corporate culture."
The show truly delivers on its promise. It’s engaging, laced with humor, highlights the absurdities of corporate existence, and offers practical solutions.
Additionally, the co-hosts recently announced their nomination for a 2024 Ambie Award as an independent podcast. The Ambies recognize excellence in the podcasting industry, awarded by The Podcast Academy in two primary categories: Show Recognition and Talent Recognition. Although they didn’t take home the award, being nominated among such esteemed shows is a commendable achievement.
In a notable victory, Aileen and Glenda recently won the inaugural Ear Worthy Independent Podcast Award for Best Workplace Podcast. With thousands of independent workplace podcasts in contention, their recognition amidst such competition is significant.
Section 1.1: Meet the Hosts
To understand their journey, here’s a brief background on the hosts:
Aileen A. Merciel (AM) served as Senior Vice President of Marketing & Creative at NBC Universal, Telemundo Enterprises. A Venezuelan-American media executive, she began her career at Sony Pictures Entertainment Networks in Latin America as an On-Air Promotions Producer. With experience in corporate roles across Venezuela, Mexico, and the U.S., Aileen humorously notes, "Coming from a creative background, I wasn’t exactly gifted with a knack for office politics."
Glenda Pacanins (GP) held the position of Senior Vice President of Programming and Content Strategy at NBC Universal, Telemundo Enterprises. After over 20 years in corporate settings, she describes herself as a "recovering suit," even if she can’t resist donning heels for podcast recordings and PTA meetings. Unlike Aileen, Glenda managed to navigate corporate life with relative ease, being "fluent in English, Spanish, and most importantly, corporate bullsh*t," according to the podcast’s website.
Subsection 1.1.1: Upcoming Episodes
For their new season, Aileen and Glenda have prepared some fantastic episodes for both loyal fans and newcomers. They kick off with an enlightening discussion about working at Amazon, followed by an exploration of what constitutes a good boss versus a bad one. Later in the season, listeners can anticipate an exciting Halloween-themed episode.
