The Power of Empathy: A Journey Through Suffering and Solutions

Chapter 1: Understanding the Depth of Suffering
In the realm of human experience, suffering is often an inevitable truth we all face. Yet, how do we confront this reality?
No one wishes to recount the heartrending tale of a lost infant, yet here it is. Imagine a child, fresh from the womb, only to be separated after a brief moment of nourishment. The cries echo for days, a haunting reminder of loss. This child is destined for a grim fate, often named after the very end that awaits them.
If this little one survives beyond a few hours, they might endure a life confined in a cramped space, often referred to by the feed they consume—usually not your own nourishing milk, but a synthetic substitute. If they manage to outlive a month, their life expectancy stretches to around 18 to 24 weeks, culminating in a grim conclusion as they become a mere dish on someone’s table.
When posed with the question of what superpower I would choose, my longing is for a solution to eliminate tears. I envision a button that grants everyone on Earth a profound sense of empathy. For it is the absence of empathy that allows one’s need for land to outweigh another’s right to shelter, or the desire for convenience to overshadow a marine creature's right to exist.
And all that pale meat in creamy sauces? It’s a symbol of this disconnect.
The genie informs me that such an empathy-enhancing button does not exist, leaving me momentarily disheartened.
Yet, then I notice another option on the list right beside Organ Rearranging—a concept I hadn’t even considered. It’s the ability to invent superhumanly. I could create anything my mind conjures, immediately. Surely, I could devise delectable meat alternatives, create faux leather that outshines the original, or invent a material that makes plastic redundant.
Or perhaps, I might craft a time machine to travel back 375 million years to thwart the disruptive Tiktaalik.
So many possibilities to ponder.
