Thriving in B2B Marketing: Exploring Five Key Functions
Written on
Chapter 1: Understanding B2B Marketing Functions
With eight years in tech and SaaS marketing, I have engaged in diverse strategies and roles to enhance marketing initiatives, support sales teams, and contribute to business growth. Reflecting on my journey, I've identified five distinct functions that I particularly enjoy and that provide unique challenges. If you’re new to the marketing field or contemplating your career development, this insight may prove beneficial. Depending on your organization’s size and your specific role, you may find yourself involved in multiple areas. Let’s explore!
Content Marketing
What Is Content Marketing?
While B2B marketers may not be engaging on platforms like TikTok or Instagram, there remains a plethora of valuable content types to share with target audiences. This could encompass whitepapers, eBooks, videos, presentations, webinars, case studies, podcasts, and blog articles. Each asset plays a pivotal role in the marketing funnel, guiding prospects through their journey as they learn about the solutions offered.
What I Appreciate About It
I find that content marketing demands a deep understanding of customer needs, pain points, and their search for solutions. Crafting thought-provoking content that draws customers in before they even recognize your product is a rewarding challenge. It’s crucial not to bombard them with a sales pitch right away; instead, the objective is to create engaging material that gently steers them towards the realization that your offerings can address their needs.
Example
One of my most rewarding projects was creating a research report from a survey of over 400 IT leaders across the APAC region. The report provided valuable insights into their investment priorities and expectations from IT service providers. This project pushed me to design the survey effectively and extract key insights, resulting in a unique report that offered unparalleled value to the audience.
Channel Marketing
What Is Channel Marketing?
In the technology sector, the landscape of partners, alliances, and resellers can be quite intricate. Ideally, these collaborations yield mutual benefits, enabling solution providers to reach new customers while offering clients complementary solutions that enhance their operations. Effective channel marketing highlights synergies and amplifies the overall impact on customers through co-branded campaigns, joint events, and collaborative content.
What I Appreciate About It
Channel marketing provides a refreshing perspective by encouraging marketers to step outside their usual focus and view the broader customer landscape. Each company utilizes a variety of solutions, and channel marketing fosters collaboration with other marketers, sparking innovative ideas and strategies.
Example
I served as an advisor for a joint marketing initiative involving Microsoft and several resellers. Despite competing interests, the partnership enhanced our collective ROI through shared resources and collaboration. We also explored new tactics, such as influencer marketing, which we might not have pursued independently.

Digital Marketing
What Is Digital Marketing?
Digital marketing has evolved alongside the internet, with platforms like Google and Facebook becoming critical for businesses to reach their target demographics. Given the substantial screen time of users today, leveraging these platforms is indispensable for marketing success.
What I Appreciate About It
The beauty of digital marketing lies in its measurability. You can track what works and what doesn’t, allowing for real-time adjustments and optimizations. While offline advertising often lacks clear metrics, digital campaigns provide insights at a granular level, facilitating ongoing improvements.
Example
In a previous position, I led the paid advertising strategy for a product launch and experimented with Reddit alongside traditional platforms like LinkedIn and Google. This new approach proved to be the most successful, reinforcing the importance of continuous testing and innovation.
Event Marketing
What Is Event Marketing?
Event marketing encompasses a wide range of activities, from small workshops and webinars to large conferences and customer entertainment events.
What I Appreciate About It
Events provide an excellent opportunity to connect with customers and gain insights into their preferences and needs. I find the creative aspects of event planning particularly enjoyable, as they allow for memorable experiences that resonate with attendees.
Example
I managed a two-day conference that attracted over 500 participants and featured 20 sponsors. From logistics to content coordination, I oversaw every detail. The event was a resounding success, paving the way for even larger gatherings in subsequent years.
Field Marketing
What Is Field Marketing?
Field marketing can vary greatly but, in my experience, it often means acting as a regional marketing lead. This role involves developing and executing marketing strategies, budgets, and plans while collaborating with teams at both regional and global levels.
What I Appreciate About It
The synergy between marketing and sales is critical for success. I enjoy seeing the direct impact of my work on customer acquisition and pipeline growth. Aligning marketing strategies with the go-to-market plan is immensely rewarding.
Example
When our organization pivoted to target a different customer segment, it required significant adjustments to our marketing strategies. By closely collaborating with the sales team, we managed to exceed our prior year’s results.
In summary, these five areas of B2B marketing not only fuel my passion for my work but also highlight the diverse opportunities within the field. While I’ve only scratched the surface in this discussion, my excitement for marketing lies in its variety and the potential for continual growth in expertise.
