Tidy Your Time: Mastering the Art of Effective Time Management

Written on

Chapter 1: The Legacy of Ben Franklin

Ben Franklin led an exemplary life, and as I mentioned last week, he had a less-discussed quality: his meticulousness. I referenced his organized schedule to illustrate how adept he was at managing his time. My phrase—"tidy your life"—proposed a method for enhancing effectiveness and organization in time management. However, upon further reflection, I realize that saying "tidy your life" is much easier than actually doing it.

The challenge lies in this: Ben Franklin passed away in 1790. More than two centuries later, we can only reflect on his completed life. Our perspective is limited to a top-down view, and any analysis begins from that standpoint.

The issue arises when we try to emulate this holistic view. The fact is, we cannot replicate it. The reason is straightforward: Ben constructed his life step by step, just as we are doing now.

With every moment that passes, we absorb new information and create experiences that shape our future decisions. This journey starts from the day of our birth. We are all in the process of building our lives from the ground up.

Attempting to replicate a comprehensive view of life from that perspective is futile. To have a chance at achieving something akin to Franklin's success, we must dive deeply into understanding the foundational elements of experience and insight that he encountered.

Saying "tidy your life" is simplistic. To truly harness the wisdom reflected in Ben Franklin's schedule, we must delve deeper. The essential insight here is that we need to "tidy our time."

This is the unspoken reality behind living a remarkable life. Franklin aimed to maximize every minute, crafting a schedule specifically designed to facilitate this. His focus was on being organized with his time, which included six blocks that encapsulated everything he needed and desired to accomplish, from deep work to relaxation.

But what does this mean for us today?

Previously, one might have thought to simply imitate Franklin's schedule. However, this overlooks a crucial aspect: we haven't created this schedule; we merely copied it. It fails to account for the unique lives we lead today and how we currently use our time.

To "tidy your time," we must first understand how we spend it right now. Your One Weekly Decision is to keep a record of your hourly, daily, and weekly time usage for an entire month.

This exercise may not be aesthetically pleasing, but it will yield valuable insights—some positive and others less so. The key takeaway is that observing how you allocate your time will provide a clearer view of where adjustments are needed.

From here, you can start to build your schedule from the ground up.

This is the only way to create a meaningful structure.
