# Understanding the Depth of Self-Love and Its Importance

The term "self-love" is often misunderstood. It’s a phrase that many of us, myself included, have taken time to fully grasp. In this narrative, I’ll recount a meaningful conversation I had with a friend facing a challenging phase in his life. By the conclusion of this discussion, I hope to clarify the true significance of loving oneself.

A few months ago, I shared a meal with a dear friend who was struggling due to his unemployment in the aviation sector. Despite his impressive qualifications and numerous certifications in aviation, he found himself unable to secure a position with any airline. His dedication to his career was evident, as he had invested considerable effort into preparing for various exams. However, rejection was all he encountered.

To complicate matters, his dating life was not thriving either. If a "playboy" is someone who easily attracts dates, my friend was certainly the opposite. The atmosphere surrounding him was steeped in negativity, and I realized I needed to confront his mindset to help him out of this slump. Here’s how our dialogue unfolded (with me primarily speaking):

Me: Do you realize what you’re missing that could alleviate many of your challenges?

Friend: What’s that?

Me: Self-love.

I didn’t make that statement lightly. While I recognized the focus he placed on his career and dating, I noticed a lack of attention towards his own well-being.

Me: Are you aware of what self-love truly entails?

Me: Consider this: the love a parent has for their child is arguably the most genuine form of love.

Me: Picture this scenario: If you had a daughter who was unwell, what would you do?

Friend: I’d take her to the doctor, ensure she gets her medicine, and look after her.

Me: And if she started developing blemishes on her skin, what advice would you give?

Friend: I’d tell her to avoid touching her face with dirty hands, wash her face properly, and use skincare products.

Me: Good. Now, if she were to experience significant weight fluctuations, what would you suggest?

Friend: It’s important to eat, but she should choose healthy foods and exercise to maintain her health.

Me: You’d offer this guidance because of your love for her, right?

Friend: Absolutely.

Me: Now, when was the last time you instructed yourself to see a doctor when feeling unwell? To practice good hygiene or maintain a healthy diet and exercise?

Me: You can advise your hypothetical daughter because you love her. If you genuinely loved yourself, wouldn't you extend that same advice to yourself?

Self-love is a concept we often think we embrace, yet we may overlook its true essence. Some might assert, "I don’t struggle with this; I prioritize myself." However, prioritizing oneself does not equate to self-love; it can often border on selfishness.

While you may indulge in personal preferences, such as choosing a movie or meal, what sacrifices do you make in the process? Perhaps a relationship deteriorates because your decisions are consistently self-centered.

True self-love involves making choices that are beneficial for your long-term well-being, even if it means forgoing immediate gratification. It's about nurturing yourself, tending to your physical and emotional health, and being your own best advocate.

So, the next time you contemplate self-love, reflect on this: Are you truly caring for yourself as you would for someone you cherish?
