Unearthing the Ancient: A Glimpse into Illyrian Heritage

Chapter 1: The Discovery of the Illyrian Helmet

Recently, archaeologists made a significant discovery in a burial site located in Gomila, near the village of Zakotorac, Croatia. This site, recognized for containing multiple tumuli and graves, yielded another burial during their latest excavation efforts. Among the findings was an iron helmet, believed to have belonged to the Illyrians, an ancient people of the region.

Ancient Illyrian helmet discovered in Croatia

The Illyrians were an Indo-European group that settled in the western Balkans during the late Bronze Age and early Iron Age. From the 5th century BCE onward, they established numerous small tribal states under princely rule. Their territory faced invasions, notably from the Celts in 280–279 BCE and later from the Scordisci and Macedonian king Philip V in the 2nd century BCE.

Section 1.1: Significance of the Helmet

Experts assert that this particular helmet is not an ordinary artifact. It was uncovered within a stone structure among other burial mounds dating from the late 6th century to the early 4th century BCE. Researchers believe it corresponds to this timeframe, suggesting its importance in the context of funerary practices.

According to Hrvoje Potrebica, an archaeology professor at the University of Zagreb, “Each tumulus contained several burials.” The helmet likely served as a votive offering, a common practice in ancient cultures where items were presented to deities or as tributes to the deceased.

“Although the newly discovered helmet has not yet been conserved, it is almost in perfect condition,” Potrebica noted. “The distinct stone structure suggests it was intended as a tribute to ancestors or associated with cultic practices within the necropolis, rather than being a grave for an individual.”

Subsection 1.1.1: A Symbol of Valor

Domagoj Perkić, director of the Archaeological Museum in Zagreb and co-author of the discovery, remarked on the helmet’s potential impact in battle. “If this Illyrian helmet was worn in combat, it likely inspired awe,” he explained. “Imagine a warrior adorned with such a gleaming piece of armor in the sunlight during battle; it must have struck admiration in their foes.”

Interestingly, this is not the first helmet to be found at this archaeological site; another was discovered four years prior, also located in a nearby tumulus, and similarly not associated with a specific burial.

Section 1.2: Understanding the Illyrians

The Illyrians met their fate in the late 2nd and early 1st centuries BCE when they were subjugated by the Romans and incorporated into the province of Illyria. Historical accounts suggest they were skilled mercenaries, serving in both the Roman and Greek armies. Over time, Slavic tribes began to settle in the former Illyrian territories.

Today, it is widely believed that modern Albanians are the descendants of the unromanized Illyrians, while the Vlachs may trace their roots back to the Romanized Illyrian population, an ethnic group originally from the Balkan Peninsula. Additionally, contemporary Romanians and Moldovans share Vlach ancestry.
