Unveiling the True Self: The Transformative Journey of Martial Arts

Chapter 1: The Masks We Wear
Every individual wears a facade, concealing their genuine self due to fear, embarrassment, or survival instincts. Over time, we might start to believe that the persona we display is our true identity, succumbing to this illusion completely.
It’s crucial to remain connected to our authentic selves. When adversity strikes, it’s the real person behind the facade who emerges. Faced with choices like fight, flight, or freeze, what will you opt for in critical moments?
To truly discover this, confront the harsh reality of who you are.
Start fighting.
I felt utterly drained. Raising my hands demanded more strength and mental resolve than I possessed. My youthful opponent bounced around me, fueled by energy and youthful exuberance.
My only aim was to survive the round, minimizing the punishment while the coach's voice cut through the noise of my racing heart and labored breaths, urging me to be more aggressive and to fight back. However, I had already hit my limit two rounds prior and was merely coasting.
As the final thirty seconds dwindled, I managed to throw a few weak punches, but I was on the receiving end far more often. In those fleeting seconds before the next round began, I realized I wasn’t the fierce fighter I had always believed myself to be.
Each sparring session offers me a glimpse into who I truly am, and it’s never quite who I expected.
It's important to clarify that I’m not suggesting we initiate conflicts with strangers in our daily lives, ‘Fight Club’ style. If you seek this kind of self-exploration, a martial arts dojo is the appropriate environment for it.
In my journey, I practice jiu-jitsu and kickboxing, engaging in structured combat with others. I once thought my warrior spirit would carry me through any fight, leading me to victory.
I could not have been more mistaken.
I aimed to be assertive, to dominate, and to submit my opponent. Yet, as soon as we touched fists, I found myself pinned beneath a massive man, who was preparing to choke me with a mounted triangle. All my intentions became irrelevant as he tossed me around like a rag doll.
When nearly 300 pounds are pressing down on you, panic is typically the first reaction. A year and a half ago, I would have succumbed to sheer panic. Now, however, I remained calm, biding my time for an escape from the overwhelming weight.
The significant weight difference meant I had to be strategic in how to free myself. Breathing became challenging, movement felt impossible, and hope waned with each passing second.
Yet, I stayed composed, conserving my energy and waiting for the right moment.
When my opponent shifted his weight slightly off-balance, I seized the opportunity without hesitation. I bridged my hips upward with all my might, causing him to fall forward as he instinctively tried to catch himself with his hands. This action created a gap between his legs that was just wide enough for me to slip through. I rolled onto my side and escaped his grasp, quickly rising to a grappling stance.
By dismantling the facade I present to the world and consistently placing myself in discomforting scenarios, I’ve become desensitized to panic.
Over the past year and a half, I’ve discovered that I am not an aggressive fighter. When faced with conflict, I adopt a defensive strategy, maintaining distance to avoid direct blows. In jiu-jitsu, I focus on defense, waiting for my opponent to make a mistake or tire out before I make my move.
The personal growth I’ve experienced is nothing short of remarkable, and I am profoundly grateful for the insights that martial arts training has provided on my ongoing journey of self-improvement.
There are undoubtedly various paths to discovering one’s true self, but I firmly believe that martial arts and, especially, sparring, serve as an expedited route to becoming a better version of ourselves.
