Celebrating Success at IMO 2024
The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) stands as the pinnacle of global mathematics competitions. Despite being comprised of high school students, participants tackle challenges that are so intricate that only a select few can master them.
For three decades, China has held the title of IMO champion with an unwavering grip. However, this year marked a significant shift, as the USA reclaimed the top position for the first time since 2019, edging out China by a mere 2 points.
The Olympiad features six problems, each carrying a weight of seven points, with a total possible score of 252 points for the six representatives from each country. Below is a chart illustrating the scores of the leading 40 nations at this year's event.
The USA and China enjoyed a substantial lead over South Korea, which finished in third place, maintaining a strong track record over the last decade.
India's Remarkable Journey
However, the standout story of the year belongs to India. After finishing ninth last year, the Indian team achieved a historic milestone by breaking into the top five this time. Their astonishing progress is clearly depicted in the chart below.
Additionally, Belarus deserves commendation for reaching their highest-ever ranking, securing fifth place. Despite a relatively small population of under 10 million, they showcased impressive talent. Singapore, with a population below 6 million, finished in sixth place.
A highlight of this year's competition was Haojia Shi from China, who achieved a perfect score. Remarkably, Ivan Chasovskikh from Russia followed closely as the second-highest individual scorer.
Australia's Participation
My country, Australia, managed to place just within the top 40. The standout performer from our team was Gold Medalist Laura Nan, representing Fintona Girls School in Melbourne. Congratulations to Laura and her fellow teammates!
Girls Make History in 2024 Math Olympiad Team
Looking ahead, the 2024 IMO is set to take place in Bath, England, in July.
In the first video, "China's Secret and the Story Behind Problem 6 | IMO 2023 Part 3," we delve into the intriguing challenges faced by competitors at the IMO.
Melbourne is also gearing up to host the 2025 IMO! I am eager for the opportunity to volunteer and assist in welcoming the brightest young minds in mathematics to Australia.
