Dream Desk Setup: Phase 1 - Monitor Arm and Leather Desk Pad
Written on
Chapter 1: Introduction to My Dream Desk Setup
This marks the beginning of a series of posts detailing the journey of crafting my ideal desk environment. My primary objective is to create a setup that is ergonomic, ensuring comfort during extended use, while also reflecting my personal style to foster a motivating workspace. Transitioning from a laptop to a desktop makes it essential to design a space I look forward to visiting daily.
I aim for my desk to be both functional and enjoyable. It's crucial that my setup doesn't solely convey a utilitarian vibe; while productivity is a key factor in my purchases, it must also align with my aesthetic preferences to encourage me to stay in one place for extended periods.
In this initial phase, I will focus on installing a VESA mount for my iMac Pro on a monitor arm and acquiring a leather desk pad for my keyboard and mouse. This phase blends both ergonomic and aesthetic elements—though I must admit, the leather pad exceeded my comfort expectations. As I document this setup process, I’ll take my time to ensure each item I discuss is something I intend to keep and use regularly.
Now, let’s delve into each component of this setup. I will provide more in-depth insights here, while future posts will be more concise, with links for additional details.
Section 1.1: Monitor Arm and VESA Mount
For the monitor arm, I opted for a Vivo model, although I can't recall the exact version I purchased. It has been a few years, so I can't guarantee that the model is still available. Nonetheless, the choice of a monitor arm was driven by several factors:
- I already owned it.
- It was more affordable than the Grovemade stand I initially considered.
- After acquiring the leather pad, I realized a traditional stand wouldn't suit my needs.
Initially, my iMac Pro was positioned at the edge of my desk, but the addition of the leather pad necessitated a reconfiguration. Both the original stand and the Grovemade model would occupy space on the pad, which was unworkable for my vision. Consequently, I decided to mount my iMac Pro on a floating arm.
This setup not only allows for additional space beneath the iMac Pro but also provides flexibility in adjusting the display's angle and orientation. A fun aspect of this arrangement is using AirPlay to stream Fitness+ workouts onto the iMac Pro, creating a shared exercise experience with my wife.
The primary motivation for utilizing a monitor arm was to enhance ergonomics. The built-in stand of the iMac Pro placed it at an inconvenient height, leading to discomfort in my upper back and neck during prolonged use. By adjusting the arm to its maximum height, the iMac Pro now sits at an optimal level for both sitting and standing. While I occasionally notice slight wobbling while typing, it is not distracting and is a manageable trade-off for the overall benefits.
Section 1.2: Installing the iMac Pro VESA Mount
To mount my iMac Pro onto the monitor arm, I needed to purchase a VESA mount kit specifically designed for it. While Apple no longer sells these kits directly, I found one on eBay for about $25, including shipping. Unlike other iMac models, the iMac Pro has the unique feature of being convertible to a VESA mount after purchase, which adds to its appeal.
The kit I received was nearly in new condition, and the installation process was straightforward. I did have some initial reservations, particularly after watching videos by Quinn Nelson from Snazzy Labs, which highlighted the fragility of the VESA mount kit. Fortunately, my experience was quite different; my biggest challenge was balancing the expensive iMac while securing the bolts.
Overall, I am thoroughly enjoying the setup with the VESA mount and the VIVO monitor arm. It has elevated the aesthetics of my desk, providing a sleek and minimalist look. The improved typing comfort, thanks to the correct height, enhances my overall experience. While I still need to tidy up the cables, I am pleased with how the monitor arm and the iMac Pro complement each other.
Section 1.3: The Leather Desk Pad
Many stylish desk setups include a leather desk pad beneath the keyboard and mouse. The Grovemade version is particularly popular, but its high price tag left me hesitant, as I initially viewed desk pads as merely decorative.
However, after hearing positive feedback about the comfort and functionality of leather pads, I decided to try a more affordable option from Athoia on Amazon. While this product may not be top-tier leather, I have been pleasantly surprised by its quality. It provides excellent comfort for my wrists during long typing sessions, and I’ve noticed a significant improvement in mouse glide on my 27-inch display.
Beyond functionality, the leather pad enhances the overall aesthetic of my desk. The combination of the iMac Pro, the black leather, and my walnut desk creates a visually appealing setup.
Conclusion: Reflecting on Phase One
In summary, this first phase of my Dream Desk Setup may not feature drastic changes, but they are essential adjustments. The improvements not only enhance comfort but also contribute to a more professional and personalized workspace. I intend to take my time in making future purchases, aiming to select the best solutions for my new workstation.
As for what’s next, I may hold off on additional purchases until February. This will allow me to spread out expenses and carefully consider my options. I’m eager to explore some new keyboards, yet I want to fully experience the Magic Keyboard for a fair comparison. Additionally, while I enjoy my Sony headphones and AirPods Gen. 3, a quality stereo speaker setup would be a fun addition. The possibilities are exciting!
