Embracing Change: Recognizing When It's Time to Try Something New
Written on
Chapter 1: The Call for Change
As I sit down to write, an overwhelming sense of heaviness surrounds me—I know it’s time to embark on a new adventure. Having been in Ghana for two years since relocating in 2016, I initially aimed to build a new life. However, after just three months, I ventured to explore other countries. Now, two years later, I find myself rooted in Ghana, feeling somewhat adrift.
There are moments when I genuinely appreciate the vibrancy of Africa—the fresh coconuts, the exotic fruits, and the warm climate. Yet, inevitably, I start to feel the urge for a shift; it’s as if I’m trapped and suffocating. I need to break free.
I’ve always recognized my free-spirited nature; I flourish when I’m on the move. After becoming a mother, I felt pressured to conform to the traditional lifestyle—a house, a car, and a white picket fence—but that path doesn’t resonate with me. I feel overwhelmed when confined to one place.
Many people live their lives by standards set by others. For me, it’s the anxiety of what my family might think. “You have a son; he needs stability. Just settle down.” It’s a tough position to be in.
As a natural wanderer, I revel in discovering new locations and experiences. I thrive while working from various settings—homes, apartments, hotel rooms, or even the beach. However, my time in Ghana has reached its limit for now. While living here has been refreshing—connecting with my roots and allowing my son to learn about African culture—it has also posed challenges.
In Africa, certain financial institutions often suspect you of being a scammer, even when you provide all necessary documentation. It’s disheartening, as Africans deserve access to platforms like Stripe and PayPal as well. Fortunately, I set up my Stripe account during my time in the UK, but I frequently encounter system flags.
I need to relocate to a country where online transactions are unrestricted. My journey here has come to a close for now.
Chapter 2: Identifying the Need for Change
When You Start to Feel Stuck
I recognize it’s time for a change when I feel stagnant. If I’ve exhausted all options to shake off this sensation and still feel trapped, that’s my cue to seek a new direction.
When You Envision a Better Life
Occasionally, I find myself daydreaming about a more fulfilling life. While I’m content with my business and income, the hurdles I face getting paid on platforms like Vocal leave me longing for a more relaxed existence without such restrictions.
When Everything Becomes Frustrating
Despite my love for Africa, I’ve started noticing irritations. Tasks that should take five minutes can stretch to two hours. Punctuality often seems undervalued. During a recent hotel stay, cleaning was scheduled for 10 AM but the staff arrived at 6 PM, expecting me to halt my activities for them. No thank you!
I understand that every country has its imperfections, but I’m ready to encounter new ones.
When You See No Progress
In Ghana, my efforts often feel like taking two steps forward and five steps back. I’m exhausted and eager to fully commit to my online ventures, but it’s challenging to do so here.
When You No Longer Feel Fulfilled
My time in Ghana no longer provides the fulfillment it once did. It’s clear to me that change is necessary.
Final Thoughts
I don’t want to come across as a complainer, but I believe in being candid about my experiences. Being a successful online entrepreneur doesn’t equate to a perfect life. Sometimes, it’s essential to allow for vulnerability—it might resonate with someone else.
