# A Culinary Journey Through Honest Burgers on Portobello Road

Chapter 1: The Allure of Honest Burgers
When visiting a burger establishment, the last thing on your mind is the restroom, right? The primary focus is undoubtedly on the burgers, and that’s exactly why I found myself at Honest Burgers on Portobello Road. Before diving into the menu, however, I made a beeline for the facilities, leaving my cycling gear in a safe spot nearby.
To be honest, my initial impression was underwhelming. While the restroom was certainly clean, its size could only be described as minuscule—clearly an afterthought in the restaurant’s design rather than a thoughtfully planned space. Thankfully, the burgers more than made up for this minor inconvenience.
Honest Burgers began its journey in 2011, founded by a trio of enterprising young individuals in Brixton Village. Over the years, they have expanded their reach throughout London, maintaining a commitment to support young talent—a principle that was evident in the attentive and friendly staff at the Portobello Road location.
For my meal, I chose the fritter—a vegetarian delight featuring southern-fried courgette, a sweetcorn fritter burger, cheddar cheese, chipotle mayo, pickles, and raw onions. This tasty creation came with a side of homemade rosemary salted fries.
When it comes to burgers, I have high standards. Nearly two decades ago, I bid farewell to chains like McDonald's, finding their offerings far too artificial for my palate. Instead, I gravitated toward spots like Ed’s Easy Diner (now sadly departed from London), GBK (Gourmet Burger Kitchen), or Five Guys for a satisfying burger experience.
Now, I can confidently add Honest Burgers to my list of favorites. The fritter was an indulgent delight—a true taste sensation! The interplay of raw onion and pickles, combined with the fried courgette and cheddar, was simply divine. The sweetcorn fritter had a wonderful crumbly texture, while the fries were perfectly crispy.
When I’m enjoying a meal on a breezy beach during a typical English summer—complete with a little drizzle—I’m usually not overly concerned about the crunchiness of my fries. In those moments, just a portion of chips with some battered cod is more than sufficient for my happiness. However, in an urban setting, surrounded by the bustling city, I crave fries that are as crisp as the fresh morning air in autumn. Honest Burgers delivered on that front, too.
In fact, every aspect of the dining experience at Honest Burgers was impressive—delicious food, outstanding service, and a prime location. And about that restroom? Well, as I said earlier, the main reason to visit a burger joint is certainly not to inspect the facilities; it’s all about the burgers!
