Non-Judgmental Charity: Reflecting on Social Media Giving

Understanding Non-Judgmental Generosity
Recently, a wealthy friend of mine shared a touching series of images with his children, depicting their efforts to help the homeless and engage in charitable acts. This post stirred mixed emotions within me. While I have a history of volunteering—taught by my father that giving back is vital during times of gratitude—I found myself reflecting on my recent experiences of homelessness.
At just 11 years old, I began my volunteering journey at the local historical society. Riding my bike to the grand mansion that housed our town’s history was a source of pride for me. I loved sharing my knowledge with visitors, making me feel valuable.
Yet, upon seeing my friend's post, I couldn't shake the feeling of discomfort. Having faced homelessness myself, I felt somewhat objectified. Despite knowing my friend has faced difficulties too, I questioned why these feelings arose.
Consider scrolling through social media on a chilly evening, confined to your car—your current home—and encountering a post from a wealthy acquaintance. This individual shares their family's holiday experience of giving back to the less fortunate, complete with joyful images and heartfelt stories meant to inspire compassion.
While I recognized the good intentions behind this post, it came across as somewhat performative, aimed at garnering likes and views. I felt like a mere character in someone else's narrative, raising concerns that such displays may oversimplify the complexities of homelessness, reducing a profound struggle to a mere backdrop for a generous tale.
This reflection isn’t intended to criticize my friend or anyone engaged in charitable work. On the contrary, I applaud such efforts and encourage everyone to share their experiences. However, I wanted to voice my conflicting feelings about being on the receiving end of publicly shared charity. While the support and meals during the holidays are undeniably helpful, they also highlight the social isolation and daily challenges I faced while living in my vehicle.
I long for a societal shift in how we address homelessness—one that delves into root causes, cultivates authentic relationships, and establishes sustainable support systems. Although I wrestle with my feelings, I believe we all do. I aspire to transform these emotions into motivation, hoping to give back in the same way my friends have, passing on the spirit of altruism to future generations.
