How a Raymond Carver Poem Challenged My Views on Technology

Chapter 1: A Surprising Discovery
As I browsed through Raymond Carver's poetry anthology, I stumbled upon a piece titled "In the Year 2020." Being a man of the 21st century, filled with uncertainty and apprehension, I felt a thrill at the idea of gaining insights from one of the literary giants of the 20th century regarding our future.
"I’m about to gain a profound understanding of modern technology and its effects. I’ll be able to impress others on Medium with my insights about AI," I thought eagerly as I dove into the poem.
However, what I encountered was utterly unexpected. The only reference to technology within the poem was a faucet, employed merely as a metaphor.
"How can this be? How can someone discuss the year 2020 without mentioning technology?" I exclaimed to myself, rereading the lines.
No, there was nothing about technology at all!
Instead, Carver's vision of 2020 revolves around themes of aging, friendship, nostalgia, love, and legacy—elements that are intrinsically human. The focus is solely on human existence and interpersonal connections. That’s the essence of his work!
HIS POEM CENTERS AROUND HUMAN EXPERIENCE. HUMANS TAKE PRIORITY!
"Wow!" I realized.
Carver's words reminded me that we—whether poets or ordinary individuals—have shifted our focus away from ourselves. We have surrendered the narrative to technology. It has taken center stage in our dialogues, poetry, and narratives. Our conversations are dominated by phones, applications, maps, followers, shares, chargers, AI, airplanes, infrastructures, and systems—these are the subjects we dwell on today. Everything seems to orbit around them!
Ideally, our focus should be on us, our connections, and the essence of life. Instead, technology now merely serves as a backdrop to our existence. It’s no surprise that we feel anxious and perplexed! No wonder we are overwhelmed by AI!
"Finally, I have a fresh and insightful perspective on contemporary technology and its consequences. I’ll be ready to share my thoughts on AI with others on Medium," I concluded, penning down these reflections.
