Remarkable Roman Mosaic Unearthed in Turkey’s Southeastern Region

Chapter 1: Discovery of the Mosaic
A remarkable find has emerged from Turkey, where archaeologists uncovered a large Roman mosaic. Recent excavations in southeastern Turkey revealed a partially intact Roman floor adorned with mosaic tiles, spanning over 100 square meters.
Turkey has a long-standing reputation for its extraordinary archaeological discoveries. This nation is the backdrop for numerous pivotal historical events, including the legendary Trojan War, and it boasts a rich cultural legacy. Istanbul, previously known as Constantinople, served as the capital of Byzantium and showcases various influences from Hellenistic culture, including temples dedicated to Greek deities scattered throughout the land.
Section 1.1: Recent Excavation Efforts
The recent archaeological activities occurred near Mardin, in the Kızıltepe district of southeastern Turkey. Reports of unauthorized excavations at the site known as Kela Hanma prompted researchers to take action. The structure had been significantly damaged, with intruders frequently trespassing on the property.
The archaeologists' primary objective was to secure the site and conduct a thorough examination. During the initial phase, they aimed to reach the oldest layers of the structure, which lay beneath a substantial layer of debris. Under the guidance of Abdulgani Tarkan, the director of the Mardin Museum, and in collaboration with archaeologist and art historian Volkan Başlayıcı, as well as archaeologist Mehmet Şan, work commenced on October 2.
Subsection 1.1.1: The Mosaic Floor
In a statement reported in Turkish media, scientists disclosed that the emergency excavations unveiled mosaic floor tiles that belonged to Villa Rustica, a prosperous rural estate enclosed by walls. This villa featured a central structure with smaller buildings surrounding it.
The mosaic floor, covering an impressive area of 100 square meters, was intricately decorated with geometric patterns and illustrations of fish, birds, marine life, seals, and aquatic plants.
“These mosaics, embellished with imagery of animals and remarkable sea creatures like octopuses and uncommon fish species, are typical of this region. Our main focus is to safeguard these artifacts to avert further deterioration,” emphasized Prof. Tarkan. He underscored the significance of preserving the country's monuments and cultural heritage, noting that the Roman settlement was nestled in a wooded area between Kızıltepe and Artuklu.
“It was more than just a rural villa; the site is replete with various architectural remains, including residential quarters and a necropolis from the 5th to 7th centuries,” Tarkan added.

Section 1.2: Another Significant Find
Researchers are currently working to secure and preserve the individual mosaic pieces, aiming for them to be displayed in the local archaeological museum. “This signifies a new chapter in the rich history of our region,” the scientists noted.
Interestingly, a similar discovery occurred in May of this year in southern Turkey, near the Syrian border. Archaeologists unearthed an extraordinary mosaic depicting the mythological hero Aeneas from Troy. They revealed that the entire floor of the ancient structure was covered in a mosaic, likely the only one of its kind known to exist. “There isn’t another one as well-preserved globally,” they stated at the time.
The second video explores the extraordinary Roman mosaic and villa uncovered beneath a farmer's field in Rutland, discussing its implications for our understanding of Roman history.
