Chapter 1: The Importance of Personal Connection
To truly captivate an audience, being a skilled writer isn't sufficient. It's essential that your readers feel a personal connection with you.
Many writers on platforms like Medium face the challenge of feeling overlooked. It can be disheartening to realize that low engagement may stem from a lack of uniqueness in your writing. You might ask:
- "Why isn't my work being read more?"
- "Why do I receive so few comments?"
- "What’s keeping my follower count stagnant at 34?"
The answer is straightforward: you may not be distinguishing yourself enough. If your content isn't compelling, it risks blending into the vast sea of similar voices.
Don't take it to heart; it's simply a matter of visibility. Given the multitude of choices available to readers, it can be challenging to stand out. To make an impact, your writing needs to be bold, genuine, and attention-grabbing.
Even with a distinctive style, I’ve found that my work still doesn’t always garner the attention I desire. Simply posting a couple of times a week won’t yield significant results. Instead, I actively seek out opportunities to promote my writing and engage with others.
Chapter 1.1: Creating a Unique Writer Persona
To truly stand out, you should develop a persona that captures attention. But how can you achieve this? It begins with effort.
Consider the time you dedicate to writing, editing, and networking. How many hours do you spend on these activities?
- 1-2 hours
- 5 hours
- 10 hours
- More than 12 hours
If you answered D, you’re correct.
"But I’m busy!" you might protest. "I have full-time commitments and side gigs."
There are ways to prioritize your writing, even with limited time. If you can carve out moments to engage with others, the growth may be gradual but effective.
Writing on Medium is akin to navigating a plethora of streaming services. With all the options, what truly captures your attention?
I have access to all those platforms, yet I rarely indulge until I’ve written and published a few articles each day. Distractions, such as television, can derail your focus on creating standout content.
Chapter 1.2: Avoiding Mediocrity
If your writing lacks distinction, readers may overlook your articles.
In a crowded space like Medium, would you rather read generic, repetitive pieces, or seek out exceptional, unique writing?
I prefer to support writers who excel—those who deliver content that resonates and stands out. To join the ranks of elite Medium writers, you must elevate your game.
My personal touch comes from infusing my interests into my writing. I have a deep appreciation for Italian mob films like "The Godfather" and "Goodfellas," which influence my writing style.
A friend once dubbed me "The Godfather of Medium," a title I embrace. It aligns with my interests and adds character to my persona.

Chapter 2: Embracing Authenticity
I’ve committed to being bold and unfiltered in my writing. Authenticity is appreciated by readers.
I write for those who find value in genuine voices. Most readers are unfazed by the occasional strong language or controversial topics.
By presenting my true self, I’ve built a following that appreciates my honesty.
To distinguish yourself as a writer, consider embracing your unique attributes rather than conforming to norms.
The writers I admire most on Medium aren't afraid to express their thoughts candidly. Their authenticity resonates deeply with their audience.

Remember, the writing landscape is competitive. Reflect on whether you possess the drive to stand out. If you choose to be ordinary, that’s perfectly fine, but I urge you to strive for excellence in your craft.
Every day presents an opportunity to elevate your writing; I hope you seize it.
