# Preparing for the AI Revolution in Writing

The Attention Economy and Its Implications
In today's world, often referred to as the "attention economy," content creators face the challenge of capturing and maintaining audience interest. Whether you're a professional writer or just dabbling in it as a hobby, the pressure to generate engaging content consistently is immense. For many on platforms like Medium, this might translate to producing articles at a rapid pace—sometimes daily or a few times a week.
What if the painstaking hours you invest in crafting an article could be matched by a machine in mere minutes? Even more concerning is the reality that audiences might not even notice the difference between human and machine-generated content.
With the emergence of sophisticated AI tools like GPT-3, machines can now produce content that leaves readers questioning its origin. This raises a critical concern: what happens to platforms like Medium if the proliferation of AI-generated articles is left unchecked?
Potential Outcomes of Unregulated AI Content
If Medium takes no action to restrict the use of AI in content creation, the landscape could shift dramatically. Many readers may struggle to discern between AI-generated content and human writing. Consequently, those who choose not to adopt AI tools may witness a significant decline in their readership.
Even if the writing community embraces AI as a tool, the volume of articles will likely remain constant. The primary beneficiaries will be less skilled writers who attract more views due to the allure of AI-generated content, overshadowing original work. Ultimately, earnings may stagnate, with lower-tier writers seeing modest increases in income while accomplished authors receive less compensation.
The Reader's Experience and Authenticity
But what does this mean for the reader's experience? Do audiences genuinely prefer AI-generated content? This situation brings to mind philosopher Robert Nozick's thought experiment regarding the "experience machine." He questioned whether we would choose a life filled with genuine experiences, complete with ups and downs, or whether we would opt to be connected to a machine that simulates only pleasurable experiences.
Most people agree that authentic experiences are preferable. If we were aware that content was generated by AI, would it impact our enjoyment? Consider the remarkable images produced by AI tools like DALL-E 2, which create visually stunning art from textual prompts.
While I believe there are valuable insights to be gained from AI technologies, I don’t support outright bans on their use. However, it's imperative for platforms like Medium to explore strategies that preserve human creators' opportunities to share their work and earn a living.
Strategies for Protecting Human Content Creators
One straightforward approach could involve capping the number of articles an account can publish daily. While this could mitigate AI spam, it also presents a simplistic solution that could be easily circumvented through the creation of multiple accounts.
More critically, if AI-generated content is permitted, readers deserve transparency regarding its origins. Publishing platforms could collaborate with AI developers to establish guidelines, such as requiring specific metadata to identify AI-generated works. This would allow for the creation of a distinct category for AI content, which wouldn’t be eligible for royalties.
By doing so, audiences could evaluate the differences between machine-generated writing and human-created content, ensuring that AI doesn’t overshadow human contributions.
Ultimately, we must consider the worst-case scenario: a future where humans abandon content creation due to overwhelming AI output. However, by clearly identifying and categorizing AI content, we can enjoy the strengths of both AI and human writing.
What are your thoughts on how platforms like Medium should manage AI-generated content? I invite you to share your insights in the comments.
