Joan Rivers, for example, became reliant on painkillers following her numerous plastic surgeries—does that classify as drug addiction? Similarly, Sam Kinison struggled with cocaine dependence, while Tracy Morgan faced challenges with substance misuse. The tragic loss of Freddie Soto due to a fentanyl overdose highlights the severe consequences of addiction.

The cast of "Family Matters," a beloved sitcom from the 90s, often grappled with trauma and addiction, revealing how personal struggles can lead individuals down the path of substance use. Notable figures like Chris Farley and Artie Lange also battled their own addictions, with Farley succumbing to cocaine dependency and Lange to heroin.

This list could extend indefinitely—many could name friends or relatives affected by addiction. The acting profession is notoriously demanding, and revelations about the hidden struggles behind the scenes are often disheartening. Many young actors, like Corey Haim, Corey Feldman, Edward Furlong, and Dana Plato, faced significant trauma that drove them to drugs at an early age.

Addiction does not discriminate based on wealth; however, it can be particularly challenging for those with financial means. Rich individuals often have the resources to support expensive habits, leading to more frequent overdoses among them. River Phoenix's tragic overdose outside a nightclub serves as a stark reminder of this reality. The issue of overdosing is not new; even as far back as 1926, Gertrude Bell, known as the "Queen of the Desert," succumbed to a sleeping pill overdose.

In contemporary society, it's common for many to witness a friend or family member struggling with addiction. Some may not recognize that a parent was a functioning addict, as was the case with my own father, who maintained a job while secretly battling alcoholism and drug use.

Today, workplaces often require drug testing to ensure safety, particularly in high-risk jobs. Recently, a tragic incident involving a cast member from "Real Housewives of Orange County" was revealed, as she shared the devastating news of her son's death due to substance abuse on Easter Sunday.

This ongoing battle against addiction requires collective effort. Regardless of one's personal recovery journey, it's essential to advocate for those who cannot fight for themselves.

I have a close friend who attends outpatient drug rehab with me and faced a near-fatal overdose a few months back. Thanks to two doses of Narcan, he was revived just in time. He possesses an incredible spirit and could bring joy to many; however, his medical struggles complicate his path to happiness. Like me, he is navigating the difficult journey of securing disability benefits, which often feels impossible for those who truly need it.

It's disheartening to see individuals who falsely claim disability receive approval on their first attempt while deserving candidates face denial. This reality reflects a broader societal issue.
